Redesigned aircraft dock in a terminal, instead of pulling up to loading bridge and the nose section of the aircraft tilts upwards or to the side for allowing passengers to be removed from the aircraft for deplaning. Cargo and baggage can be loaded using modules that utilize skids, automation, and/or robotics for easy loading and balancing of weight. The airport system will minimize passenger traffic on the airport grounds. The airport system or network includes a secure remote airport facility for servicing one or more airports. The remote airport facility includes a remote tower having a security checkpoint for entering passengers into the secure airport system and then transporting the passengers to the secure airport terminal. Scaled Composites created the ARES testbed aircraft which used a single Pratt and Whitney Canada JT15D-5 turbofan engine (same as in the Beechjet / T-1A Jayhawk trainer), and a GAU-12/U 25mm Gatling gun. www.scaled.com The ARES Mudfighter is cleverly designed so its 25mm GAU-12U 25mm autocannon is on one side of the aircraft fuselage while the turbofan engine intake is on the other--this also puts the nose of the plane forward to prevent birds from going into the engine! The 2011 UAV, the N+3 Strut-braced Single-aisle Aircraft (NSSA), took its first test flight Sept. 5, 2011 piloted by Chuck Bower. It was a fantastic success, having performed a taxi test first, and using up a minimal amount of battery charge the team went ahead to do a short flight before swapping batteries. After a few laps around the field, the UAV made a successful landing. Data was collected, batteries were swapped and a second flight was made, shown in the other video. UW A&A Aircraft Design is taught by Professor Eli Livne, assisted by Chet Nelson (among others). The test took place at the Naval Outlying Field - Coupeville. The challenge this year was to design a N+3 high aspect ratio strut braced airliner concept, to provide efficient transportation for our future.

Synergy is a very advanced aircraft design that uses six important principles of drag reduction, including powered drag reduction. This video shows the work of John McGinnis and his family, volunteers, partners, and supporters to build the first full scale prototype of his novel 'double box tail' configuration. Synergy seats at least five people and is intended to become a kit aircraft using molded construction.
